Great Expectations: What Happens at Your Appointment When You Haven’t Been to the Dentist in a While

Whether you’ve been avoiding the dentist out of anxiety, a busy schedule, or for any other reason, if it’s been a while since your last visit, it’s normal to be a little nervous about coming back. The great news is that not only is there nothing to be afraid of, but it’s also never too late to return to caring for your oral health. If you’re ready to make the call and schedule a preventive exam and cleaning, here’s what you can expect to happen at your upcoming dental appointment!

Check-In for Your Check-Up

Whether you’re brand new or an established patient, it’s a good idea to arrive at least 15 minutes early for your dental appointment. This way, the front office team can get you checked in and ensure you’re comfortable, have you fill out any necessary paperwork, and collect any co-payments you may owe without cutting into your treatment time.

Teeth Cleaning

Once you’re checked in, you will be called back to the exam room. Once you’re settled, your teeth will be professionally cleaned. If it’s been a long time since your last visit, you may have a lot of plaque buildup, so this could take a bit longer than you’ve experienced in the past. Though it may seem time consuming, this is a very important step to protect your teeth, as it removes harmful bacteria and debris that could lead to cavities and gum disease. It also makes your teeth look whiter and brighter!

Digital X-Rays

Once your smile is squeaky clean, your dental team will take some digital X-ray images of your teeth and jaw. These will give your dentist an inside look at the condition of your oral health and alert him or her to any developing issues such as cavities or infections.

Oral Exam

After your dentist has reviewed your digital X-rays, they will examine your teeth and gums in person, keeping an eye out for any abnormalities or issues that may have been picked up on your X-rays. They will conduct a thorough oral cancer screening and discuss any concerns you may have about your dental health. If there are no issues, you will be free to check out at the front desk and book your next six-month preventive exam, so you don’t have to worry about it later.

If your dentist does find any problems during your exam such as a cavity, gum disease, or tooth infection, your team will provide you with a detailed treatment plan, including your estimated cost of care. You can book the appointment for any necessary procedures at this time, or in some cases you may be able to be treated same day depending on availability.

Remember, while it may have been a long time since your last visit to the dentist, you never need to feel anxious or ashamed to return. Your dentist is here to protect your teeth and gums and ensure that you live a long, healthy life, not pass judgement. Don’t wait another moment to keep your smile safe.
