If you’re thinking about starting your orthodontic treatment with Invisalign, congratulations! It’s a smart move for your continued oral health. However, there are some things you should know before treatment begins. There are numerous benefits to a straighter smile like improved confidence, comfort, and hygiene, but getting there may be a challenge.

If you want an honest look at some of the struggles you may have, continue reading.

1. It’s a Commitment

Invisalign is generally faster than traditional braces as far as how long you’ll be doing treatment. However, the exact timeframe will vary from person to person. You’ll need to have your aligners on for at least 22 hours a day.

The only times you can remove them are to eat, drink, and brush. You’ll be doing this for several months to a year or more depending on your treatment plan.

2. Oral Hygiene Is More Important

Maintaining excellent oral hygiene during Invisalign treatment is crucial. Your aligners and your teeth should be cleaned twice per day to prevent issues like cavities or gum disease from developing. If complications arise while your treatment is in progress, you may be forced to put it on pause to address them.

3. There May Be Discomfort When You Start

It’s normal to experience some initial discomfort or pressure when transitioning to a new set of aligners. Understanding that this is part of the adjustment process helps manage expectations. Persistent or severe discomfort should be discussed with your dentist.

4. You May Have to Make Some Lifestyle Adjustments

While Invisalign offers more flexibility than traditional braces, there are still lifestyle adjustments you may need to make. Some of these include limiting foods and drinks that stain, quitting smoking, and caring for your aligners. If you want to keep your treatment discreet and on track, you may need to sacrifice some vices.

5. You’ll Have Several Follow-Up Appointments

Regular checkups with your dentist are essential for monitoring your progress and ensuring the treatment plan stays on pace. You’ll need to be prepared for several visits to your dentist as you progress.

For all the added work that Invisalign presents, it’s important to remember that the benefits far outweigh the costs. A straighter smile means better social interactions, more confidence, and a healthier mouth overall. Ask your dentist and they will agree that anything worth doing requires a bit of work to accomplish.
