Dentists have used crowns to rebuild and reshape compromised teeth for centuries, and many advancements have been made since these restorations were first used. While you may have one or more metal or metal-fused-to-porcelain dental crowns, modern CEREC restorations look exactly like real teeth and can be much more comfortable to wear. Here’s a quick overview of a few excellent reasons why you should consider replacing your old metal restoration with a gorgeously lifelike ceramic crown.

Why Should I Replace My Metal Crown?

Metal crowns are quite durable, but they can also be incredibly conspicuous when you laugh or smile. Metal also easily conducts heat and readily expands and contracts in response to temperature changes, and the stress of a restoration changing shape in this way can cause a great deal of discomfort when a patient drinks hot or cold beverages.

Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns have been a popular way to keep a tooth beautiful after it has been restored, but these models also have their limitations. As the restoration ages, the porcelain shell that maintains its natural appearance can gradually separate from its metal base, resulting in an unsightly dark line forming around the appliance. Replacing your old restoration with a gorgeous new CEREC dental crown is a convenient and effective way to resolve all these issues.

How Do CEREC Dental Crowns Work?

Metal-free dental crowns offer durability and chewing power similar to metal restorations, but they are also incredibly lifelike and free from dark components that can begin to show due to age. While metal-free restorations have traditionally been placed through a process that involves at least two appointments over several weeks, CEREC dental crowns can be manufactured and placed during a single appointment.

The process of placing a CEREC dental crown begins with the patient receiving an appropriate anesthetic to ensure their comfort, and they may also receive sedation treatment if they need extra help staying calm. Then, the dentist will remove infected matter from the tooth and use a scanning device to create a three-dimensional map of the mouth. This information will be fed to a specialized machine that will mill your customized dental crown down from a ceramic block, and your dentist will cement it in place when it is complete.

A CEREC dental crown is a great way to achieve a more beautiful smile without having to take much time off work or school. Consulting with your dentist can help you find the best way to achieve a healthy and gorgeous smile.
