But you’re not alone if you’re worried this treatment might hurt. Continue reading to learn more about what sensations to expect so you can set your mind at ease!

What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a one-of-a-kind restoration that’s customized to resemble your natural tooth, then is cemented on top of it to protect it from damage, decay, and disease. But these lifelike prosthetics are also quite versatile and can be used to cap a dental implant or anchor a bridge to close spaces in your smile left behind by missing teeth.

The traditional method of making a dental crown involves multiple dental appointments spread out over a couple of weeks, but thankfully, many dentists help reduce wait times by offering updated CEREC same-day restorations instead.

Does Getting a Dental Crown Hurt?

Fortunately, getting a dental crown isn’t typically a painful procedure. If your provider has advanced CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics) technology, they may even be able to provide your prosthetic in the same visit as your initial examination.

First, your dentist will assess the affected tooth to determine whether this service is right for you. If so, they’ll need to prepare the tooth so the cap fits correctly without looking bulky or causing misalignments. They’ll likely administer a local anesthetic to numb your mouth before proceeding, though many providers also offer sedation, such as nitrous oxide (laughing gas) or a prescription pill, for patients with more severe anxiety or who struggle to sit still.

Then, they’ll make mess-free, digital impressions of your mouth that are uploaded into the special computer software, which designs your customized dental crown. Finally, your prosthetic is carved out of a block of resilient ceramic using an onsite milling machine and carefully cemented over your injured tooth to restore its appearance and function.

What Can Cause Dental Crown Discomfort?

Your dentist can help you remain comfortable throughout your procedure, meaning you likely won’t have to contend with potential discomfort until any applied medications wear off. Then, you might feel temporary sensitivity that can last a few days, but this typically fades on its own and can often be managed with over-the-counter solutions, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen.

With that said, the underlying tooth might eventually start to throb if it develops decay, an infection, or is cracked or broken. If you experience persistent, severe, or worsening aches that don’t subside after several days, please contact your dentist. They may need to remove your crown to examine your tooth and ensure everything fits and functions correctly so you can heal as intended.

If you’re unsure how your dentist intends to help keep you comfortable during your dental crown procedure, the best way to find out is to ask them directly!

About the Practice

Patients at Sage Dental Care benefit from two dentists who are passionate about helping families in Reno build and maintain beautiful, healthy smiles.
